Coordinator Comments Spring 2009
The Inland Mendocino Cooperative Weed Management Area is the younger of the two WMAs in Mendocino County, but this organization has gotten off to a rapid start, thanks to the example set by the Coast WMA. The Inland WMA has already been successful in obtaining grant funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and from CDFA, and has initiated on-the-ground work on red sesbania, broom and distaff thistle, in addition to some extensive prevention, education and outreach efforts.

Broom Bash
Brooms- Scotch, French, Spanish - line the roadsides in many parts of Mendocino County. Their names give the clue- they are not native to this area, but were introduced as horticultural plants and then escaped into the wildlands. Although the blooms are beautiful, these plants are devastating for wildlife and increase wildfire risk because they are very flammable. Along roadsides, they also pose a safety hazard as they reduce visibility and obstruct pedestrian corridors. What can we do about it?
