Centaurea calciptrapa (purple starthistle)
The seeds of this plant are dispersed by animals and in forage.

As far as we know, Centaurea calcitrapa has been eradicated from Mendocino County. There was an historical population in the Westport area, but no plants of this species have been observed since that population was eradicated. This plant is typically seen along roadsides or in disturbed pastures.
